Jennifer Hudson Speaks Out About Murders Of Mom, Brother & Nephew: ‘It’s Frustrating’

Jennifer Hudson Family Murders

The 2008 murders of Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew was a gruesome tragedy that forever changed the singer/actress’ life. Years later, Jennifer is speaking candidly about that awful day, and how her young son helped her persevere.

Jennifer Hudson, 34, revealed in an interview with Glamour that her son, David Otunga Jr., 6, “saved her life” after her mother, Darnell Donnerson, brother, Jason Simpson, and nephew, Julian King, were murdered by her sister’s estranged husbandWilliam Balfour, in 2008. Moreso, she spoke about how agitating it is to have people attempt to relate to her tragedy.

“It’s frustrating as hell to me to have somebody who ain’t lost nothing try to talk to me about it,” Jennifer said. “I want to say, ‘Don’t even bother, because you know nothing.’ But you never know how much you can get through until you’re going through it.”
Well said. Jennifer has been through unimaginable loss and heartache, and it’s shocking that people who haven’t felt that think it’s okay to bring it up casually! Jennifer’s truly one of the strongest people in the world to get through this, and succeed even more in her career. She’s credited her strength to her son, David. Giving birth to her baby boy one year after the murders gave her a fresh start.
“I went from being an aunt, having a mom, and being a child to not having a mom, becoming a mom, and raising my own child,” Jennifer said. “I tell David all the time, ‘You saved my life.'”

In her Glamour interview, Jennifer also discussed her upcoming role in Spike Lee’s film Chiraq. She plays a woman in Chicago whose daughter is killed by a stray bullet — a role that opened up those still-fresh wounds. But Jennifer will still get through whatever comes her way!
