Since the beginning of history, snakes
are despised, feared and considered as ruthless killer beings. Somehow,
through time humans see the bright side and hidden nature of snakes and
it is proven in these extraordinary images taken by the most fearless
scuba diver. I guess you’ve seen these images before but the story
behind it is far more incredible, showing that snakes are more
fascinating than any work of fiction.
In one of his diving expedition in Mato
Grosso region of Brazil, Swiss diver and snake enthusiast Franco Banfi
along with Daniel De Granville had a chance to capture the gentler side
of snakes in their natural habitat…
Banfi came face to face with a 26-foot-long giant anaconda and he’s armed with nothing, but only his camera.

image creditGladly, the giant snake paid no attention to the photographer, as it was full from a capybara rodent it ate earlier.

Banfi, a father-of-two from Switzerland,
said: ‘As the snake had just eaten it didn’t take much interest in
us. ‘Everything is possible but I don’t think it would have eaten us. I
was very close, I could have touched it if I wanted to.’
In fact, Daniel De Granville says that anacondas are actually quite shy around humans, and likely have much more to fear from us than we do on them.
Though Banfi initially admitted that he was scared especially of the first encounter, knowing the snake’s reputation of being cunning, deadly, and vicious.
“But after a while you understand that nothing happens if you respect the snake.”
“I have never been so close to a snake
like this before. But I think a small poisonous snake is scarier than a
big one. At least you can see the anacondas clearly and know what
they’re doing.” the fearless diver added.
Banfi was able to see six different
female anaconda snakes during his ten-day trip to the Mato Grosso do Sul
region, right in the heart of South America. The name means “Thick
Forest of the South”. Thousands of visitors go to Mato Grosso for its
diverse and natural beauty.
Though Banfi came out of this photoshoot
unharmed, it isn’t suggested to follow his lead as anacondas are known
to be man killers once they reach this size. It is always a must to
take the necessary precautions. You wouldn’t want to end up being a prey
anyway.
