Well, she's defied the odds before, so it makes sense she wouldn't heed anyone's warnings about intense exercise while pregnant.
At six months
pregnant, most of us would be using it as an excuse to sit on the sofa,
put our feet up and munch on some chocolate digestives.
But that just isn't the way Bethany Hamilton does things
In 2003, Bethany lost her arm to a
tiger shark, while she was getting in a Halloween surf session. A lot
of people assumed that this would end her budding career as a
competitive surfer, but it most definitely didn't.
As little as a month after the
attack, Bethany was back in the water and thanks to true grit and
determination, she won her first National surfing title about a year
after that!
Incredible.
So, while we might use pregnancy
as an excuse to slow down, Bethany isn't about to heed any of the advice
about only doing "moderate" or "gentle" exercise during this nine month
period.
Considering that before she was
pregnant her workout routine was downright menacing - she would do
weekly tabata, bosu ball, high-intensity cardio and dumbell sessions, on
top of her regular surfs and beach running - it makes sense that her
pregnancy routine would be a little more strenuous than the average.
Despite telling Fitbump360
that she's definitely taking time to rest, she also admitted that she
walks, climbs, does some spin classes at her gym and also claims to have
done some of her BEST surfing while pregnant!
At five and a half months
pregnant, Bethany said she started to really feel the weight of her
belly while on her surfboard, but at just over six months she's still at
it.
Speaking of her drive to keep
going while pregnant, the surfind superstar told Fitbump: "I am more
energetic and happy when I've gotten some exercise and....giving birth
may be one of the most physical events a woman goes through, so being
active and keeping muscles alive and ready is what I believe we need to
do."
She also said she's keen to
follow in her brothers' footsteps, by getting the new addition to her
family out on a surboard as soon as possible.
